Istanbul is the modern name of Constantinople. (p. 8)Do you know the Silk Road? It is the name of the route which Chinese travelled with silk to westwards to trade it and other products about 2,000 years ago. Constantinople was the name of the place where Asia ends and Europe begins. More than 1,700 years ago, a king Constantine 1 moved the capital of the Roman Empire to Byzantium. Then he changed the name of the city to Constantinople. Now the name of the city renamed to Istanbul, and the city is the largest city in Turkey. Arab trader groups from Middle East were travelling long distances by both land and sea, and the large groups are called caravans. Chinese merchants took tea, spices and painted wooden goods on their journey as well as silk. This book is described mainly about Chinese merchants, religion, the Silk Road and other connections.
