This book explains how and why earthquakes happen. Most earthquakes happen near the edges of tectonic plates, because when stress in tectonic plates is too much for the plates, they break along the fault suddenly. I think the scariest point of earthquake is it's unpredictable. Nobody knows exactly when and where an earthquake will happen, but scientists predict some areas where earthquakes are more likely to happen. Earthquakes happen frequently in Japan. They are scary because a tsunami occurs sometimes caused by an earthquake.
